Dune: Awakening is an open-world survival MMO set in the iconic universe created by Frank Herbert. Developed by Funcom, the game offers players the chance to experience the harsh desert world of Arrakis, with both its awe-inspiring landscapes and the threat of deadly sandworms, known as Shai’Hulud.
The adventure begins with players unable to escape the reality of survival on Arrakis after a ship crash. Starting with only basic tools, players must gather resources to survive. Mechanics around resource management focus heavily on hydration, reflecting the scarcity of water in the desert. Players will initially find themselves crafting items, gathering dew, and extracting resources from enemies to stave off dehydration.
Dune: Awakening is deeply inspired by the Dune lore and creatively integrates elements from both Herbert’s novels and recent cinematic adaptations. One of the game’s standout features is its character creator, presented as an interrogation by a Bene Gesserit Reverend Mother, allowing players to select their appearance, backstory, and class—such as Mentat or Swordmaster.

However, while the initial gameplay is engaging, issues arise in the endgame where the lack of diversity among enemies and repetitive tasks diminish the excitement. The endgame PvP is also critiqued for feeling less rewarding, as it shifts focus from ground combat to aerial battles, which can lead to frustrations for players not wanting to engage in hostile encounters.
Despite its shortcomings, Dune: Awakening succeeds in bringing the rich world of Arrakis to life, offering a blend of survival mechanics and story-driven gameplay that holds players’ attention for dozens of hours.
