Capcom’s recent showcase for Resident Evil Requiem provided insights into its gameplay mechanics, revealing how the experience will vary based on the player’s character choice. Notably, the game introduces Grace Ashcroft as a new heroine, embracing a more traditional horror gameplay style reminiscent of earlier titles such as Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 6. In contrast, when controlling Leon S. Kennedy, the gameplay shifts to an action-oriented tone akin to Resident Evil 4.
Players will not have the option to choose which character to play at will, as specific story segments are designed for each character. Grace, while physically weaker than Leon, compensates with unique abilities, such as crafting weapons utilizing the blood of the infected. Additionally, she wields a powerful firearm named Requiem, though its limited ammunition encourages players to strategize their attacks.
The game also introduces new difficulty settings. The Casual mode is designed for players who prefer to focus on the story, including features like aim assist. The Standard setting offers a moderate challenge, while the Standard (Classic) mode requires players to find a limited number of ink ribbons to save their progress, harkening back to the franchise’s early days.
A standout feature of Resident Evil Requiem is the portrayal of more human-like zombies. These creatures may retain the instincts and behaviors from their past lives, complicating players’ interactions. Notably, one showcased zombie was even able to communicate with Grace, leaving players wondering about its narrative significance.
Resident Evil Requiem is set to launch on February 27 for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC.
