NetEase and Bungie have unveiled a new mobile game in the Destiny franchise called Destiny Rising. This sci-fi RPG is set in an “alternate timeline” of the Destiny universe, emphasizing what NetEase refers to as “best-in-class” shooting mechanics on mobile devices.
The game promises “a brand-new adventure featuring both familiar and new characters,” in addition to offering “a wealth of classic and innovative game modes.” A closed alpha test is slated to start in November—pre-registration is available now. In September, the disclosure of a Destiny mobile title by Bungie and NetEase surfaced. This came on the heels of a 2018 announcement that NetEase was set to invest $100 million in Bungie for non-Destiny related projects. It’s possible that the terms of their partnership have evolved, as Destiny Rising is undoubtedly part of the Destiny franchise, suggesting there may be further collaboration between Bungie and NetEase in the future.
Alongside Destiny Rising, Bungie is also developing a survival shooter titled Marathon and reportedly other initiatives. The year 2024 marked a period of significant transition for Bungie, which included extensive layoffs that impacted numerous senior team members. Moreover, some staff members are transitioning to a newly formed team under parent company Sony to develop a fresh action game.
