Nintendo has recently launched a significant system update for the Nintendo Switch, designated as version 20.0.0. This update comes equipped with the new Virtual Game Cards feature, which was highlighted during the March 2025 Nintendo Direct. The update also introduces GameShare support, allowing users to share games across Switch systems in anticipation of the upcoming Switch 2.
With this update, digital titles and downloadable content (DLC) purchased will convert into Virtual Game Cards, which mimic the functionality of physical game cards. This enables users to easily share digital games between two Switch consoles, facilitating better management of their digital library. Furthermore, users can temporarily loan digital games to others within their family group.
The GameShare feature enables owners of Switch 2 to share compatible games with Switch 1 users, reminiscent of the DS’s Download Play function. This allows for multiplayer sessions without needing all players to own the game.
Additionally, the update includes a system transfer function for moving data from Switch 1 to Switch 2. Nintendo has also made minor adjustments to the eShop and News icons and has added functionality for transferring multiple save data at once.
This update precedes the global launch of the Switch 2 on June 5. Preorders for the console opened on April 24 and were quickly sold out, although games and accessories remain available.
