College Football’s Iconic Pantheon Receives a High-Tech Wi-Fi Upgrade

When it comes to iconic college football teams, few resonate like the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Their history is rich with legendary figures, but recent years have seen the university reevaluate the experience of their fans. Alongside their legacy, fans now expect a top-tier stadium experience. To enhance this, Notre Dame Stadium, which accommodates 80,000 spectators, has undergone a significant connectivity upgrade. This project, a collaboration with HPE Aruba Networking, has made it the first college stadium in the U.S. to utilize Wi-Fi 6E with the new 6 GHz spectrum for outdoor use, as part of a broader initiative to ensure robust Wi-Fi coverage throughout the campus.

The previous system, installed in 2017, catered primarily to basic internet usage. However, with the increasing popularity of live streaming, video sharing, and mobile app usage during events, the demand for bandwidth has surged. John Buysse, Notre Dame’s senior director of university network and telephony services, reported that the network can now handle data speeds up to 25 Gbps – a significant leap from the previous 5 Gbps. Along with speed, data usage has also skyrocketed; the stadium previously saw four to five terabytes used during events, which has since increased to an astounding 15 to 20 terabytes.

To meet this rising demand, over 1,100 indoor and outdoor access points were installed throughout the stadium, successfully handling a record Wi-Fi traffic of over 26 Gbps during a recent playoff game without any delays. Enhanced connectivity has improved fan experiences significantly, with features like mobile ticketing, grab-and-go concessions, and plans for streaming multiple games in premium areas. The university has tested mobile ordering for food with notifications for pickup times, adding convenience for fans.

Beyond the immediate fan experience, Notre Dame is leveraging their stadium to explore advanced technologies. Collaborating with Federated Wireless, the university navigates the complexities of utilizing the new 6 GHz Wi-Fi band with a system called Automated Frequency Coordination. This cloud-based solution minimizes interference from multiple devices accessing the same signals, thus ensuring a more stable and expansive Wi-Fi coverage.

Moreover, the Wireless Institute at Notre Dame is piloting a private 5G network aimed at bolstering connectivity across campus for students and faculty. While full implementation of the private 5G network may take some time, essential communications will be transitioned to maintain connectivity for critical services, such as campus public safety.

The ongoing upgrades extend beyond the stadium to the entire 1,265-acre campus, which is anticipated to achieve comprehensive Wi-Fi 6E coverage by August. The university is also exploring AI tools from HPE Aruba for insights on network usage to help manage potential connectivity issues.

The commitment to a superior network experience reflects a broader trend across sectors, with a survey showing that 93% of IT leaders believe the network’s role is increasingly crucial for meeting business objectives. As organizations adapt to evolving consumer expectations, Notre Dame’s ongoing advancements illustrate the importance of robust network infrastructures to enhance customer experiences, matching their historical excellence in collegiate football.
